Ever had that feeling of being clueless when choosing gifts for the men in your life? When it comes to gift-giving, men are probably the hardest people to shop for. As most men don’t really open up too well on their personalities, the options become limitless as you really are not sure what they will appreciate and what they will simply throw straight to the drawer. Why not go through some of these suggestions and find out which fits your man perfectly?

Try skin care kits that most men usually make use of. Unknown to most of us, a lot of men nowadays pay special attention on their skin yet some of them do not have the guts to buy these products themselves. Aside from shaving, they now find the need to moisturize and nourish their skin and so these kits make a great gift option. When the weather gets colder than the usual, sweaters and jackets are a must. Not only do they give warmth, they also add a stylish feature on their wardrobe.

Fashion items might also do the trick when giving gifts for men. Denim jeans have become a staple item which goes well with sports coats and dressy shoes. Corduroy pants work well as business casuals and weekend wear. They have that rich look and velvety feel that adds texture on their otherwise drab outfits. Polo shirts have become a regular in the American wardrobe while blazers, sport coats, and suit jacket make a man look well put together. The trick here, though, is finding the right size.

Surprisingly, bags and luggage are gaining popularity as gift items for men. You just have to explore and choose well to avoid the risk of returning due to wrong size or color. Fortunately, there are now more companies that come out with stylish designs for these items that are especially made for men. For men inclined on the technical side, stylish laptop bags prove to be well appreciated by them.

Of course, you can never set aside watches and jewelry. A limited budget does not mean you can’t give a neat watch or a small piece of jewelry. There are now plenty of choices in the market. You can select according to the design, size, color, and price of the item you want to buy. Aside from a ring, men now opt to wear cufflinks. Men’s cufflinks have a variety of styles and designs. They even have different forms, like those shaped as surfboards and tennis rackets that would just be the right pieces for a sports enthusiast! They can also be personalized by engraving letters, a special date, and even quotes that are meaningful to the one important person you are giving it to. Ideas for men’s cufflinks are endless. It all depends on the recipient and sometimes, even on the giver.

Now you have lots of ideas on what presents to give to the guys in your life. Just remember that what counts most is that you give with all your heart, and would not expect anything at all in return.

Whether your interests are in silver, gold, artistic, sports, or other theme-related cufflinks we’ve got you covered. Cufflink Aficionado carries a broad range of men’s cuff links designed to meet each connoisseur’s individual style and interest. Our selection of classic cufflinks are sure to top off that perfect look.

We’ve all heard the horror stories of timber arriving and only half of it being usable. We thought we’d have a quick look at some of the reasons timber can be defective.

Cupping.

Cupping is literally when tangential-cut boards experience shrinkage due to the growth rings swelling faster at the heart, causing them to bow. Radial-cut boards are therefore a safer bet as their shrinkage will be less noticeable.

Knots.

Knots are often a good indicator of the quality of the timber. The fewer knots, the higher the grade of timber. Knots are evidence of where trees have started to grow branches that got broken off (branch fail!). Knots only tend to dramatically affect the strength of the timber if they are “dead knots”, or knots that have become loose.

Shrinkage.

As the cause of cupping mentioned above, shrinkage occurs as timber continues to lose moisture content. The drying process increases timber strength, but continued drying often leads to shrinkage.

Bowing.

Imagine a sagging shelf. Incorrect storage or even the board’s own weight if ill-supported can cause gravity to pull it down in the middle.

Splitting.

Like the fraying ends of cloth, splitting starts at the end grain and carries on through the board.

Shakes.

When enormous pressure builds up under the earth, fault lines are present where the earth’s tectonic plates slip past each other due to huge pressures. In trees, when growing (either non-uniformly, or sometimes due to frost) or seasoned, the release of internal stresses, and subsequent “crack!” result in shakes. Shakes can go all the way through the diameter of a tree, making a lot of its wood hard to use. It’s not always apparent until sawing that this fault exists.

This is by no means a comprehensive list of timber defects, but covers a few of the most common you may come across.

Minimising Wastage.

Of course, the more timber you have that can be used, the less wastage there is and the further your money goes. Timber that consistently suffers from any of the above defects delivered time and time again is going to give any company a bad name.

Some merchants will simply ship you out what’s in stock, no matter what state it’s in. Merchants that commonly do this aren’t usually concerned with repeat business and you might find you have a hard time getting things rectified, with staff not wanting to know.

A merchant that prides itself on delivering quality timber will have rigorous quality control procedures and mechanisms in place. These should include the timber merchant company buyers visiting the sawmills that the timber is imported from and hand-selecting the timber that they know their clients will be able to use.

Because this is a time-intensive process, prices may be a little higher from a reputable timber merchant, but you’ll be able to use 99% of the timber you receive, rather than 50-60% in some poor cases, for which you’ll end up paying more in the long run in time and money.

No child takes up a culture that is outside of the medium or environment in which it is born into; it grows to come to know that that is the way of life on this side of the divide. Whether it now chooses to live by it when it comes of age of knowing to choose between the one and the other is another thing entirely. If anything is wrong with the culture of a people, it certainly should be dealt with and not destroy that culture by imposing another on the people because that is their life. If the culture of a people is perceived to harbor some impurities such that the child has grown these impurities, do you totally jettison that culture or do you separate the dross from the silver? Therefore since the culture of a people dictates their actions, I believe if almost everyone of that tribe thus behaves in accordance with the impurities in their culture, the ills of that culture should be dealt with and not ostracize such people or kill their culture else you murder them in cold blood. The culture of a people is their life and it is like the software, or rather the operating system that the hardware computer requires to function.

Likewise the faith of someone, is what makes him take the actions he takes and the rights of everyone must be respected, so long as the faith or culture of a people does not contradict the socio laws, the environmental laws, the political and it does not deny other people of their rights to justice, equity, fundamental human rights in general. But if the faith of a person propels him to act in a way that negates the rights of others, then should be called to mind what needs to be done concerning that person’s action. And if it is evident that the person’s action is rooted in his believe system, then what can politics do to bring a change to a believe system other than influence it to a change and expunge those gray areas causing people to take wrong actions, instead of make stubborn laws and pronouncement through politics to deny a people their faith and culture, using illegality to bring about legality all in the name of political interventions.

A person can choose to have a change of believe system if he sees a greater light but it would surely be totally wrong that a state should begin to act in a way that favors a section of the state with a believe system or culture the state considers acceptable to it while dealing harshly with others that are contrary. When political leaders begin to make people’s faith what needs to be legislated about or what they must direct how its pendulum swings, then there await ahead a deep crisis that would bring about blood birth.

The global leaders today seem to be missing it and going the way of King Uzziah in the bible in 2Chronicles 26:16-21 who mixed politics and religion and did not let his faith be his personal affair with God but sought to have control over what happens on the pulpit and eventually will dictate to the people which god to serve. In as much as value system, culture, faith has what it takes to change politics, politics on the other hand does not have that power to change value system, faith or culture but can only influence it. But if politics insists because it has all the power to change value system, culture, faith; it should thread carefully by seeking the consent of the people else it destroys everything by its overzealousness.

I am therefore happy that a man as President Barrack Obama who had been trained and prepared by God is in charge in the White House today, who knows to separate his faith from conflicting with people’s rights. My advice to those leaders in and around the world who blatantly favor one faith over the other, one culture over the other be it in America and around the globe should thread carefully and learn from this Modern Nigeria state with her religious and ethnic conflicts; for they have veered on that route. And I must at this stage make the Nigerian situation a case study for the world leaders. Almost all of the ethnic and religious crises in Nigeria today are political. It is the political actors who crept in a long time ago into religion for political gains along with the religious leaders who sold their soul for the gain of riches and had left the pulpit to the control and dictates of the politicians. These politicians therefore, easily brainwash the followers with whatever lies they feel will fulfill their personal desires and since the people are highly religious and ignorant, they can go even as far as killing people and bombing places around the world since they have been made to believe it is all pleasing to God. At first nothing was wrong with their faith, but now it has been infiltrated. All these therefore become a tool in the hand of the politicians to perpetuate their evils against their opponents.

I salute President Barrack Obama for declining to stop a Mosque from being situated by the WTC; this is the mark of a true leader who knows that he is a leader of all and not a section of the state, tribe or faith. A leader of a heterogeneous society in our today’s world is not just one of one faith and not of the other. Neither is he of one culture and not of the other nor is politics for one faith and not for the other or of one culture and not the other. But personal greed, emotions, pride, superiority complex and sentiments move global leaders to act the way they do today; therefore the perpetuation of the Middle East crisis which I believe could be well managed but I guess we have come to live in such a time as this in our world to live with and manage whatever comes our way.

I am Kissinger Akugue, a Nigerian based here in Lagos Nigeria. I am a Poet, a Screenplay Writer and I have a desire to go into politics and probably contest for an election. I am also into the business of Phone Repair Services. I believe in a world based on the principle of justice and equity.

Many people are under the impression that in a fight, the best thing to do with your hands is to ball them up into fists. This idea is so common that we use the phrase “fist fight.” However, in reality, open hand strikes can be more effective fighting tools than fists in almost any situation. This is why open hands are used in martial arts styles such as Kun Tao, Pentjak Silat, and Combat Tai Chi.

People often use fists because they believe that the fist delivers more force. Without proper training, this might be the case. However, at a certain level, this is no longer true. Martial artists will test the force that they can deliver with targets such as bricks, striking pads, or boards. They have found that when enough force is being delivered, the small bones that are exposed in a fist simply do not hold up against the force conveyed.

In contrast, when open-handed strikes are used, the soft parts of the hand mold themselves around the hard parts of a strike’s object. This has a two-fold effect. First, the hand of the martial artist is protected. There is much less risk that the hand of the striker will be injured. Second, this molding can actually convey more force. When the palm and the fingers come in contact with and mold themselves around a target, they covers much more surface area than could be reached by a fist.

A well-trained martial artist will not simply be using the force of the arm or the hardness of the fist in an attack. Instead, the power of the whole body, from the feet all the way up through the torso and the arms will be put into the strike. The surface area of an open hand strike allows all of that power to be transferred through the hand into the target of the hit.

The power of open-handed strikes is not the only reason they are superior to a fist in a fight. Open hands also offer far more versatility than fists. They transform more easily into other kinds of attacks. This kind of strike can easily become a finger poke to the eye or to another sensitive spot. They can also turn into a grab or even into a fist in the right situation much more easily than a fist can change into anything else. This versatility has benefits on the defensive side of things as well. An open hand can defend against a knee or an elbow strike whereas a fist could do almost nothing against these two kinds of attacks.

Open hand strikes are also a lot faster than fist techniques. More open hand strikes can be delivered per second than is possible with fist attacks. Furthermore, this kind of attack can also be the basis for more powerful strikes. They can be used for destructive Kung Fu techniques such as iron palm, vibrating palm, penetrating palm, poison palm and even dim make, or death touch strikes.

While at first glance the fist might seem like a more practical fighting tool, never underestimate the power of the opened hand.

Sigung Richard Clear has been studying martial arts in both the United States and China for over 30 years. To learn more about Kun Tao and other martial arts that use open hands, visit his website at www.clearsilat.com.

Silat refers to a collection of martial arts from Southeast Asia. Silat was developed in a region where tribal warfare, hunting were common activities. Tribes fought over property, trade routes and even engaged in cannibalism. Tribes also fought as a group in ways that enabled them to catch large animals. They would wait for an individual to stray away from companions and then multiple attackers would use knives, clubs and other weapons in order to bring down the victim.

In addition to the tribalism that shaped this martial art, the area in which Silat developed also frequently fell prey to invasion from outside forces. China, Japan, and even the Dutch invaded Indonesia and the surrounding areas. Silat practitioners learned to defend themselves against these outside forces but also learned from them. Silat also derived much from the immigration of the Chinese. Silat practitioners learned and adapted the arts the Chinese brought with them. Consequently, Silat includes its own version of Kung Fu, Tai Chi, and other martial arts forms.

There are many different forms of Silat. Some Silat forms are completely focused on surviving dangerous situations. Others are more cultural in nature. There are forms of Silat which are used as sports. These sporting types of Silat do not make use of the more deadly features of the art. While participants might enjoy a good competition with other people in the village, they didn’t want to break their arm or kill them. Another cultural form of Silat is used as a ritual challenge for the groom at the wedding. These types of Silat do not often include techniques which would be useful in combat. Instead they are very flashy and enjoyable to watch.

However, the combat side of Silat is very deadly. The environment in which Silat developed did not allow for artists to have a sense of fair play. In a life and death situation, attackers were not going to follow any rules and Silat practitioners couldn’t afford to either. Consequently, Silat focuses on techniques that would bring an opponent down quickly. Bone break strikes are common as well as joint manipulation strikes and pressure point strikes. Silat also developed techniques for dealing with multiple attackers. Practitioners needed to be able to bring one attacker down quickly and then quickly disengage so as to be able to deal with other attackers immediately.

Silat training can take on a number of different forms depending on the school where it is being taught. Some schools teach Silat in much the same format as the teaching in a Chinese or Japanese martial arts school. Others use a conceptual style of teaching and still others focus more on sparring.

Because of the constant need for practicality, Silat also tends to be very adaptable. If something proved to be useful and worthwhile, it was quickly made use of by Silat artists. In the same way, if something wasn’t useful, Silat quickly discarded this. This adaptability can be seen today in that Silat teachers often instruct students in firearm retention and counter firearm techniques as well as in the use of more traditional weapons such as knives or clubs.

Richard Clear is a master practitioner of Pentjak Silat and has been studying martial arts for over 30 years in both the United States and Asia.

Here we are in December and I feel like I have taken on a part time job to go with my full time job and all my other responsibilities. Of course, I am talking about getting ready for Christmas. I’m talking about decorating the house and tree, sending Christmas cards, buying and wrapping gifts, baking cookies and other goodies, extra social engagements, church activities, and all the other activities and responsibilities that seem to come with Christmas. I’m sure you know exactly what I mean and that you are also wondering how you are going to find time for it all?

The Pareto principle states that 80% of our greatest benefit comes from 20% of our efforts. At this time of year especially we have to trim our schedule and decrease the number of activities that fall into the 80% that are not contributing to our greatest benefit. Granted, deciding what these activities are can be difficult to say the least.

Consider your activities according to these five categories and focus mostly on the first two :

- Important and Urgent- if you don’t get gas right now you may end up sitting by the side of the road with an empty tank and you have a child waiting to be picked up after school at 5PM.

- Important and Not Urgent- sleeping, spending time with your family, eating healthy meals, getting enough sleep.

- Urgent but Not Important-the telephone rings right when you are in the middle of something, the dog runs across the kitchen floor with muddy feet.

- Busy Work- checking and answering e-mails, making sure you do things perfectly, not delegating easy tasks that could easily be delegated.

- Wasted Time-too much socializing around the water cooler or on the telephone, too much social networking, too much television, perfectionism.

To find enough time to get ready for and enjoy your Christmas, you must start with a plan. Start by listing all your Christmas activities, then consider the importance of each. Do you bake dozens of carefully decorated Christmas cookies because it is something you have always done? Do you participate in a Christmas cookie exchange or a church gift exchange for the same reason? What if you skipped the cookies or made drop cookies instead of iced cookies this year? Or maybe ordered cookies from a bakery? What if you skipped the church gift exchange and spent that time focused on family gifts? What if your family agreed to buy gifts for the children only and not for the adults? Or maybe draw names for the family gift exchange? Which social activities and parties are important to YOU and which do you attend just because you always have or someone else expects you to? Which activities might you be able to delegate? Maybe hire a high school neighbor child to wrap gifts for you or put up the outside decorations? What time wasters and unimportant tasks and activities can you eliminate this month?

“Efficiency is doing things right, but effectiveness is doing the right things.” ~Peter Drucker~

Perfectionism is another time waster! There is a big difference is doing things correctly, doing a good job and trying to do things perfectly. Of course, some activities need to be done better than others. If you are driving you will want to strive for a higher level of excellence than if you are gift wrapping. Driving is a life or death activity and getting the bows perfect on your gifts is not. Parkinson’s law states that work expands to fill the time available. You can always do an activity a little bit better, a little bit fancier, a little bit bigger. The cure for this is to schedule a reasonable but specific amount of time for a task, set a timer, and then be done with that task when the timer goes off.

It has been found that multitasking also wastes time. Your concentration is divided and each interruption requires you to refocus and reconcentrate. You get much more accomplished when you block out a period of time to work uninterrupted on your task or project. A British study found that workers who were interrupted by phone calls, text messages, and e-mails suffered a greater loss of IQ than if they were smoking marijuana. Sleep deprivation also lowers your effectiveness so shortchanging yourself on sleep to get the extra tasks of Christmas completed is usually a mistake. One thing to remember when blocking out time, after two or three hours your brain becomes fatigued and efficiency decreases significantly so it is best to set your schedule to change activities every two or three hours.

One final thought regarding getting is all done this month relates to organization. Wasting time finding things you have misplaced occurs when you are surrounded by clutter. Keep surfaces cleared and put things away where they belong so you can find them quickly the next time you need them. Another reason for having desk and counters clear is that having a jumble of things in your view is distracting. Only have what you are working on in front of you and you will concentrate better and finish your activity more quickly and accurately.

I hope these ideas will help you make your Christmas the best ever, full of what is important to YOU and free of everything that does not matter to YOU.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Being invited to a baby shower is somewhat an honor that not everyone can get. However, before you go to that party, you have to make sure that you have a gift. Giving a baby shower gift is a good gesture and an etiquette, and so you may want now to hunt for something wonderful to surprise the expectant mom.

Aside from the gift itself, it is a great idea to wrap the gift with effort and creativity. Gifts for babies are always adorable, and they deserve to be wrapped or packaged just the way they suppose to be. Here are some wrapping styles you might want to consider for those cute baby shower gifts.

Sometimes, it is fun to wrap a baby present in a way that it reflects the gender of the child. If you know that the parents are expecting a baby boy or girl, one best idea is to consider a wrapping style that suits the baby’s gender. The very common style is to wrap a present that in “baby boy blue” or “baby girl pink” – but you have to remember that there are many other colors that you can choose from. Don’t limit yourself to blue or pink, rather allow your creative juices to flow so that you can come up with something unique for your baby shower gift.

However, if you are invited to a baby shower but the mom-to-be is not yet sure if it is going to be a boy or a girl, don’t worry because you can still wrap your present in a style that fits both sexes. One great neutral idea is to wrap the gift in white paper and instead of using one colored ribbon, use two colors – blue and pink. Tie the two ribbons together and tape them at the back of the package. Then, gather them to form a bow on the front of the package. You will realize that this wrapping style is very easy to do and is always safe to present even if you don’t know yet the gender of the upcoming baby.

Adding some toppings is a wonderful idea to jazz up your baby shower gift. There are plenty of cute items you can use for this idea, including baby rattles, teething rings, baby mittens, booties, hair bow, Christmas ornaments, mini picture frames, small stuffed animals, plush toys, etc. All of these items can be attached to the package by either using ribbon, string, tape, or anything that help. Also, these wonderful toppings can be used by the baby, so there’s no reason throw them into the trash can.

Wrapping a baby shower gift can go beyond traditional ways of wrapping square gift boxes. If you find teddy bears cute, then do the teddy wrapping style! You can find lots of wrapping paper with teddy bears on them, which are great to use to wrap a present in a teddy bear theme. Alternatively, use a soft cocoa colored paper to wrap the gift and then attach a mini teddy bear on the top of it. You can use a white or brown ribbon to make a bow near the little teddy. If you don’t want to use a teddy bear, consider a teddy bear rattle or teething ring as your topping.

Baby shower gifts and wrapping materials can be purchased online. You can also find baby gift baskets that come in wonderful themes, which are also great to give. Making a baby gift basket is also one way to make a creative package of baby gifts for the mom-to-be.

This Christmas, farm toys are no doubt going to be a part of your holiday wish list, as they are every year. If your little farmer is interested in farms and animals, you’re no doubt curious as to what you might put on your holiday gift list. There are some classics, of course. After all, who can forget the song “The Farmer in the Dell”? There are also plenty of newcomers to the farm toy market, making each Christmas shopping season different from the last. Here are some of the most popular farm toys this year:

1) The John Deere pedal tractor

What says farm more than John Deere? This maker of grown-up farm implements is also known for their line of tractor toys. Perhaps the most popular of these is the John Deere pedal tractor. This season, your youngest farmer may be interested in a pedal car, and what better way to kill two birds with one stone than to purchase a John Deere pedal tractor? Featuring all metal siding and a seat that allows younger children to navigate around the barnyard without needing the balancing skills that would be required of them on a regular bicycle, this is a great way to pair imaginative farm play with outdoor exercise. The John Deere tractor pedal car will no doubt provide hours of active entertainment for younger children. Because it is larger than many other John Deere toys, for your best bet of finding it in stock buy online.

2) Scale models of farm equipment

Always one of the most popular farm-related toys for kids of all ages, there are several companies making scale models, including ERTL and John Deere. These toys will allow your children to play with a fraction of the real deal. Many different varieties of farm equipment are available, and your children can mix and match to create a mini-farm that is all their own.

3) Animal Toys

If you’re looking into farm toys, you’ll no doubt be interested in some of the animal toys that are available. Many of these toys are cast from durable plastic, and can be combined to create an authentic farm that includes horses, pigs and cattle. From the simplest styles designed for toddlers to more realistic models for older children, animals are a must-have for stocking the farm.

4) Trains

Trains are another piece of Americana that doesn’t seem to fade in popularity where toys are concerned. If your child has set up a pretend farm, why not have a train track to run alongside it? There are, of course, many versions of the ever-popular toy train, from Thomas the Train for the preschool set to more elaborate setups with real working engines.

Regardless of the age, ability level or interests of your child, you’ll be able to find some great toys this holiday season. Farm toys are always in vogue, and so you will have plenty to choose from. From John Deere farm implements, including the pedal tractor, to models of farm animals and equipment, your child will have hours of fun with their pretend farm.

Global Warming or global climate change has been in the news for about a decade now with governments and corporations cooperating to reverse the greenhouse effect of trapping more heat that gradually increase surface temperatures. These gasses are mostly from human activity resulting from the use of fossil fuels in cars, coal-fired power plants, heating systems from fuels or natural gasses and appliances that release CO2.

Deforestation contributes to the problem as increasingly less CO2 are converted to oxygen. Not only does increased CO2 traps heat, it also traps methane gasses that occur naturally with decomposing organic waste from garbage landfills and decaying plants and dead animals as well as the processing of fossil fuels.

Scientific statistical data shows that the last 150 years of the industrial age saw the increase of CO2 by 31% and over the same period, atmospheric methane rose by 151%. The consequence is increased heat being trapped in the atmosphere with less escaping into space. The phenomenon alters climates and weather patterns that cause severe and more frequent storms, coastal flooding from a melting polar ice cap and the prolonging draughts and winters.

But is this just a hoax?

Recent developments have alleged a “Climategate” conspiracy that exposes the global warming scare as a fraudulent attempt on a global scale by corporations and governments in collusion with dishonest scientists. In November last year, the interest was aflame with news of an earth-shaking scandal from leaked emails and data from the Climatic Research Unit (CRU) of the University of East Anglia in the UK that has served the primary source and advocacy on the theory of Global Warming and served the motive guidance behind the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

The leaked information from download files showed more than 4000 documents that abundantly point to a falsification of data used by scientists to support of the Global Warming scare. These documents have been authenticated and provided clear evidence of a conspiracy further fueled by the CRU’s repeated refusal to release their computer model data for the basis of the Global Warming theories they have foisted on unsuspecting governments, people and industries.

Who Benefits?

The debate is now simmering and has polarized the scientific community on the issue. The bottomline seems to be, who will benefit if it’s a hoax? The Global warming scare has effectively put car makers to come out with new hybrid non-carbon-emitting vehicles. It has compelled oil companies to look for alternative power sources and has certainly impacted our lifestyles with impositions on our consuming habits and to use more earth-friendly products. There’s big money involved, no doubt. On the other hand, if global warming is a fraud, the big oil companies would be the first to benefit as they can continue spewing CO2 into the atmosphere. Time to pause and think.

There is a website that describes Global Warming and numerous other topics of interest such as conspiracies, secret technology, ufos, secret weapons research, bible end times predictions and many other such subjects, this website is called: The Great Deception and it may be found at this url: http://www.great-deception.com
